Our Historic Equestrian Program
Founded in 1914, the Equestrian Program is Knox’s oldest, continuous sports activity. The program is run from the Phebe T. Phillips Byrne '68 Equestrian Center, an historic, horseshoe-shaped structure featuring 25 stalls, a newly renovated outdoor ring with sprinklers, a covered track with sand and rubber footing, a turnout field and a full jump course. Here at Knox, we offer boarding for those students who wish to bring their own horses and work with their present trainers our our accomplished team of trainers to continue a program that works best for both student and horse.
The Knox Equestrian Program is a 5-day per week program designed for students of all ages and riders of all ability levels – beginner, intermediate, and advanced. The program focuses exclusively on hunt-seat equitation, hunters, and jumpers. We are proud to offer a focused, yet flexible riding plan that allows each student to receive a personalized equestrian experience. If you have a love of horses and ride for pure enjoyment, our program will allow you to nurture your passion in a safe, professional and fun environment. If you would like to compete, we can help you reach your goals by offering you individualized attention in creating a program to help you be successful.
Riding is a three season sport here at Knox. We also are proud of our Community Riding Program, in which Knox seniors assist and earn community service credits.
Knox is a member of the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) which allows us to be recognized and compete as a team sport. The IEA is also a source of scholarship opportunities for the equestrian athlete.
Coupled with our athletic endeavors, the Equestrian Program promotes Knox’s Core Values. Ninety-five percent of our riders this past year were honor students and were highly supportive and respectful of each other both in and out of the riding ring. Here, the Golden Rule IS the rule at the barn. Riding at Knox is an individual sport with a team twist to it…your horse. Horses teach us empathy, patience and discipline and we have seen individual lives changed and influenced by interaction with horses.
We hope you decide to join us here at The Knox School as a member of our Equestrian family.
