STEAM Teacher

The Knox School, an independent boarding and day school on Long Island, New York, (grades 6-PG) is looking for a motivated, energetic, creative Makerspace Innovator to join our team of Science Educators in bringing our growing STEAM program to new heights. Prospective candidates must be passionate about and committed to teaching students to engage in real-world thinking and problem-solving on their own by guiding them and exposing them to the ever-changing technology in our world. Experience in 3D-printing/CAD design (Sketchup, TinkerCAD, SolidWorks, AutoDesk, etc), robotics and/or electronics (Legos, Arduinos, Raspberry Pi, LittleBits, tetrix, etc), makerspace instruction, and coding is a must - engineering experience is a plus. Knowledge of Code.org, MineCraft, Sphero and other applications would be useful. Must be willing to coach a First LEGO League Team and promote and run a Girls Who Code program.

The Knox Makerspace Innovator’s areas of direct responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Building, organizing and leading our makerspace environment
  • Designing and leading “maker,” robotics, and coding activities and lessons
  • Working in partnership with the Science Department Chair and classroom teachers to design maker, robotics, and coding activities that complement Knox’s STEAM efforts and curricula
  • Collaborate with and mentor students during out-of-class and after-school clubs and activities
  • Work with other volunteers to assist them in using the makerspace lab
  • Maintain attendance records, write lesson plans, teach lessons, and provide evaluative feedback
  • Set up and maintain a classroom that creates a positive learning space
  • Manage the daily operation, maintenance, and organization of the Innovation Lab
  • Maintain up-to-date inventory and order expendable materials as needed
  • Support student projects in the Innovation Lab
  • Support the STEAM director in the instruction of STEAM electives and Engineering courses.
  • Support the implementation of STEAM integration throughout the school as directed by the Science Department Chair.

The Makerspace Innovator will report to the Assistant Head of School and Science Department Chair

This position requires an educational background in a STEAM-related field and a passion for working with young people and STEAM! The right candidate will be mentored to assume a larger faculty role in our vibrant and growing STEAM department.

Part-Time History Teacher

The History Department Chair will become a member of a dynamic Academic Team led by the Assistant Head of School and will be responsible for teaching United States History, World History and AP United States History.

Our ideal candidate is an energetic and articulate team player. This person will have excellent communication and organizational skills, strong classroom management skills and will be passionate in promoting History achievement in our students. The ideal candidate will have at least two years of teaching experience at a boarding school and a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in History. Preference will be given to candidates who have Department Chair experience and who possess a master’s degree.

Teachers at The Knox School are expected to coach up to two seasons of sports, live in the dormitory and serve as dorm parents. Fencing Coach

The Knox School of Saint James, NY, a nonsectarian, independent college preparatory boarding and day school for grades six through twelve with a post- graduate year, is expanding its teaching and coaching staff and is currently accepting applications for a Fencing Coach for the 2018/2019 School Year. The Knox School provides students with a strong and supportive academic program, a familial environment, small class sizes, and enriching arts and athletic programs.

The Fencing Coach will:

  • Assist in the direction and instruction of Fencing.
  • Ability to mentor and motivate student-athletes in the sport of Fencing
  • Assist in the planning, organization and direction of all Fencing Practices.
  • Understand the rules governing the sport of Fencing.
  • Communicate regularly with student-athletes and parents.
  • Assist in attracting quality student-athletes to The Knox School.
  • Communicate effectively with the Athletic Office
  • Comply with The Knox School’s Employee Handbook.
  • Work with the School to market and promote the program

Qualifications:

  • Previous Fencing experience at the College Level
  • Minimum 1 year coaching experience (within a school setting preferred)
  • Ability to travel to and from athletics contests and practices between the hours of 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
  • Associate Degree; Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Valid driver’s license

Bus Driver

The weekend and weekday position requires the driver to transport students and faculty to special events, field trips, & sporting events. The position requires the ability to conduct pre/post trip vehicle inspections, act & react in a mature professional manner, and be responsible for the safe and timely operation of the school bus van. The potential candidates must have good verbal communication skills, be dedicated, reliable and a team player. The rate of pay is $20.00 an hour.

Qualifications:

  • Possess a valid NYS CDL with “P” and “S” Endorsements, 19A qualified & fingerprinted
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background criminal investigation, drug test, NYS DOT physical, & physical performance test. Pass all NYS 19A mandatory testing
  • HS diploma or equivalent, must have maintained a CDL for the past two years & have a clean driving abstract
  • Provide three positive work references

Middle School Science Teacher

The Middle School Science Teacher will become a member of a dynamic Academic Team led by the Assistant Head of School and Science Department Chair and will be responsible for teaching Earth Science, Physical Science and Life Science.

This person will have excellent communication and organizational skills, strong classroom management skills and will be passionate about promoting science achievement in our students. The ideal candidate will have at least two years of teaching experience at a boarding school and a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Science. Preference will be given to candidates who have prior teaching experience and/or who possess a master’s degree.

Coaching Staff

The Knox School is currently accepting applications for Tennis Coach, Girls JV Basketball Coach and Boys JV Basketball Coach for the 2018/2019 School Year. The Knox School Coach must be able to direct, instruct, manage and train individuals pertaining to a specific sport and must facilitate a sportsmanlike team.
