Jiaying (Gia) Zhao ‘17

The Knox School is excited to congratulate Jiaying (Gia) Zhao ‘17 on her early decision acceptance to Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). Gia has been a student at Knox and an active member of the visual arts community since 2014. Originally from Henan, China, eighteen year-old Gia was always interested in the arts; although, she did not initially see art-making as a viable career option. It was not until she began studying in the U.S. that she realized her talents and passion could support her dream of becoming a professional artist.

In the summer of 2016, Gia participated in the Summer Pre-College Program at RISD. During this six-week program, she fell in love with with the “art-school atmosphere.” She was inspired by the talented and friendly people, and received encouragement from the esteemed faculty. She knew that she wanted to be a part of the RISD culture. So with her eyes on the prize, Gia applied for early decision, and was welcomed with open arms.

Although her world of art-making will expand once Gia is exposed to the wide variety of techniques and media at RISD, she currently hopes to design book covers. “I love reading and would love for my art to promote a love for reading in others,” said Gia, when describing a dream of seeing her work on display in a book store.

We foresee a brilliant future for this creative young lady! Keep reaching for your dreams Gia!
